arrived in the office this morning with a sigh of relief because it's finally friday, and i can't believe i got through all days in the week by not membolos at all. i can't say i was working hard during those four days, but i did skip quite large amount of magabut-ing.
the work has been challenging... in a good way. but it is exhausting nonetheless.
first thing i did as i sat in my cubicle was logging on to facebook. something about how vain the site is never fails to attract me. i looked around, stopped to peruse photo albums of a friend who went to europe. and then i pondered. will i ever get there?
suddenly i remembered i'm supposed to have loads of things to do. can i afford chillaxing around like this?
you know, this being-busy kind of thing makes me wonder... do i care about what these people are being busy about? i said to adit the other day, "i think now i can figure out why people get 'mad', like go crazy, actually lose their mind stuff. i think it's because they get tired of pretending. pretending to care, pretending to be something they're not. they bear all the grudges, sink 'em in the bottom of their stomachs, until one day, all hells just break loose. they practically lose the strength to carry on pretending. please pray for me that i won't go mad like that."
yesterday i was at prumpung. i took the chance (or the dare) of driving alone there. i missed the nearest toll exit to the office, so i had to go round under the flyover. i tried not to get stressed out with all crazy motorbikers, angkots, and aggressive car drivers all rammed on the road.
the meeting itself was long. the highlight was the catering service. the sambel tasted nice, and they served bakso on afternoon coffee break.
on my way from prumpung to jl.sabang (planned to meet adit there), i, again, missed the flyover on which i should be driving... i had to swerve right to rawamangun, and i thought, instead of making another round under the flyover, i'd just head to pramuka. long story short, i made it to jl. sabang. i sang out loud while driving, tried to ignore any gak-sabaran drivers that cut in my way.
at jl. sabang, i immediately walk to sabang16. i'd been wanting to nongkrong there, eat the kaya toast, read books (they serve books as well) so i would stop pressing on my blackberry, but too bad all the seats were occupied. so i entered kopityam oey instead. i didn't know what to eat there because i couldn't recall any fond memory about the food served. i ordered es cincau, and after a long perusing on the menu, i asked for nasi tim. i sat there alone, with an almost-dying blackberry, waiting for adit to come. it was an uncomfortable kind of waiting. no books or magazines. the chairs had no cushions. the seating arrangement was awful, totally not suitable to make me feel comfortable of sitting alone, because it offered no sense of "privacy"-if you know what i mean.
after what felt like a long wait, adit finally came. he stumbled upon his college friend who looked a lot like @newsplatter. (but it wasn't henry manampiring, adit introduced us). he chatted basa-basi-ly, and then we checked out of oey. august 30th is my mom's birthday. i totally forgot to wish her HBD on the morning when we dropped bumy by at her house. so to make her 'forgive' us, i said to adit i wanted to buy her a cake, a birthday cake. that's why we went to baked goods. i picked the carrot cake, and the mas-mas offered us to put writings on it. adit said, "happy birthday oma, aja." one mas-mas took the cake to the 'backroom' and then he sang "hepi bertdey omaa, hepi berdey omaa" without realizing we could hear him. the mas-mas on the cashier seemed embarrassed, but that only made me and adit laugh out loud.
when the cake's ready, mas-mas (didn't see whether it's the loud singer or not) said, "pak, bisa dapet lilinnya juga loh." to which adit replied with "oh bagus kalo gitu. ulang tahunnya kan yang ke-60. saya minta lilinnya 60 biji." the mas-mas went "huh? gak muat di kuenya pak!" and then adit and i once again laughed hard.
it's so hard for me to have a good laugh these days. what a pity, right. i remember that good time working with colleagues who are mostly my age, and they became good friends of mine. we joked a lot, laughed a lot. one thing i would suggest a fresh graduate when it comes to job hunting or job-hopping is, "see if you can make good friends there (at the office)." because it would greatly help prolong your endurance towards all the stress and grief in working.
we arrived at my mom's house on 20:30 pm. she was at her room at that time, and i surprised her by bringing the cake inside. she was indeed surprised, and most of all, she looked so happy. she thanked us, and immediately wanted to taste the cake. i told my sister to take pictures and send them to my brother and dad who are in jogja. i hope this would make the babybrother feel homesick :P
i remember earlier that morning, on the red light just 200 metres from my office, i said to adit, "i'm feeling like a failure right now."
maybe it's the hormones. maybe it's because a friend who happens to live abroud just 'lectured' me how to differentiate british, american, and australian accents. it's supposed to be a good joke, but somehow on the wrong timing (blame the hormonal cycle), it made me feel belittled.
points taken are: A) you're nothing until you live abroad. and B) those papers say nothing about your competence. C) make some real achievements.
adit said "but from my point of view, you've achieved so much."
not that i'm ungrateful (maybe i am), it's just... i would really feel proud of myself if being rated not only on how many mandatory to-do's i've been putting checklists on. (get married, have kids, land a good job). i want the pride to come from producing a good article, making a living out of something i truly love, and contributing to the world. and by contribution, i don't mean figurative one like "bekerja itu ibadah", but a real one. like help decrease poverty, make street children happy, etc. i am thankful for everything God has given me, but maybe i feel this way because i know i haven't actualized myself to its full potential. this shit i'm babbling is so "self-help", huh.
oh well. one of the bosses just told me to join them in the meeting room.
"those who can, do. those who can't, teach."
